HI! I'm CARA!
I grew up in Napier, a coastal city in New Zealand known for vineyards, sunshine and Art Deco style architecture.
My mother was a textiles teacher and taught me how to sew my first ‘project’ at age five, which over the years developed into the construction of women’s apparel and home textiles, which I still continue to produce. From this early taste of design I went onto study textiles at Massey University of New Zealand, where I graduated with a Bachelor’s in Textile Design with honors.
Post graduation, I have pursued my love for pattern design, producing designs for screen printed textiles, building exteriors, street boxes, wallpapers and limited edition canvases, some of which have been distributed in New Zealand, Australia, Spain and the United States.
My design inspiration is drawn from both the contemporary and historic design world. Influences include architecture, small critters and animals, bold pattern, urban cityscapes, vintage fabrics and wallpapers, and pattern designers Florence Broadhurst, Lucienne Day, William Morris, Suzy Hoodless, and Aimee Wilder. In early 2009 I relocated to the heart of Washington DC and jumped straight into the design scene as an interior design consultant and creative director of Skynear Designs, before joining the Pure Energy team in 2011. In addition to working at Pure Energy, I am the Education Coordinator and a screen print instructor at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center.
When I am not working on design projects, I am doing my best to travel to as many corners of the states as I can pack in whilst I am here, camping in the Shenandoah and exploring the many fabulous museums in DC (with a particular fondness for the Textile Museum of course!).
