The Charlie Bowman Garden @ 9117 Flower Ave

Have you ever driven by that ONE house on Flower Ave between Schuyler and Melbourne Ave in the Highland View neighborhood? You know, the one you can't help but notice with all the tall mature tropical plants, beautiful flowers and amazing cacti in every square inch of the yard? YES that one!
Well, Pure Energy Real Estate has the unique opportunity to represent this special property for a one-of-a-kind garden project in preparation for the real estate market. It comes with sadness, however, because the home belonged to the late Charlie Bowman, a long-time member of the Sligo Branview community and a passionate gardener. Charlie was a plant collector and zonebuster, well known for his exotic and rare plant collection of cacti and succulents as well as many usual and unusual perennials including lilies of all sorts, heucheras of many varieties, wild ginger, paw paw, columbine, cacti, ferns of probably a dozen types, boxwoods, golden loniceras, yuccas, dasolirions, Thalictrums, crinums, palms, dicentra, epimedium, fatsia to name but a tiny portion of the fully planted quarter acre lot.
The only problem with all these amazing plants is that it is very overwhelming to home buyers. There is a large backyard but NO GRASS! So in order to make the home appealing to the most amount of home buyers, we decided it would be a good idea to remove the inner garden and lay sod. It seems sad to remove such a beautiful garden that has been living so happily for 30+ years, but we knew just the right group of plant lovers to make the transition a happy one. We teamed up with the Four Seasons Garden Club to thin out the abundance of rare and exotic plant life, create a grassy entertainment area, send a portion of this amazing collection to new homes and pass on Charlie’s love of these unique plants. We left the outer rings of the garden, which is going to be just as incredible for any new home buyer. It really is a gardener's delight. The front yard is being thinned this weekend by the Four Seasons Garden Club. When all is said and done, the yards will still be magnificent and we believe Charlie would be happy to know we sent a portion of his garden to fellow plant lovers so they can live on in his memory.
The overall project was photographed, filmed and time lapsed. We are still in the process of finishing the transformation but for now, enjoy a wonderful photo gallery of this amazing garden and a fun time lapse of the garden removal from last weekend.
